The "Advices" were what we know today as want ad media or advice columns. John Campbell is credited for the first newspaper, the 'Boston News Letter', which appeared in 1704. The paper was known during the revolution as "Weeklies". The name came from the 13 hours required for the ink to dry on each side of the paper. 'The solution was to first, print the ads and then to print the news on the other side the day before publication. The paper was four pages long having ads on at least 20% 30% of the total paper, pages one and four the hot news was located on the inside.

Both short and long term programs most often offer a work placement into a related business/studio during or after your studies. This is very important for gaining experience which is often required for landing your first job. Some students get lucky, and get hired from the place they are doing their work practicum. Other students might even get hired before they even finish their program. Often schools will have good relationships with the industry in their area, and keep these businesses informed about their students. Sometimes schools will mention the businesses that they keep in contact with.

As such, designers will constantly try to see things differently, learning what to look for when other people aren't looking for anything, and finding patterns in what seems like randomness. This goal is one attained through experience, and comes to all good designers in time. Being artsy is all well and good, but without anyone to commission your work, there's no career to be had. Graphic designers have ongoing goals or at least should have ongoing goals that include finding new clients interested in their work. This requires knowing the ins and outs of good marketing, building a brand that is self perpetuating. The goal in this regard is to build a "storied" brand a brand that speaks for itself. Graphic designers with a story, or at the very least a persona, are able to sell their brand without the typical advertisement ploys that many people are desensitized to. While entry level positions may not require experience other than skills gained through a degree program, employers expect Web designers to have a solid understanding of HTML and programming languages. To prepare for employment, students can demonstrate that they have practical experience by completing an internship while enrolled in undergraduate studies. Prospective designers may also choose to start their careers by offering freelance services and getting paid by assignment. This can further help graphic web designers develop a strong portfolio to secure permanent employment.
